Progress Energy supports innovative ways to use and conserve energy sources that protect our environment. We partner with organizations throughout our service territory to support hydrogen, solar and other forms of renewable and alternative energy.
We are actively adding new renewable projects, including large-scale solar photovoltaic arrays and biomass contracts, and launching new customer incentive programs. Our SunSense solar programs are aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy in our service territory by offering premium prices for electricity from solar power. To learn more about our solar initiatives, please visit here.
We also continue to engage our communities to discuss the benefits and challenges of renewable resources. For example, in 2009 we installed a small-scale demonstration wind turbine at an elementary school in Madison County, N.C., to help educate rural communities about wind power.
Progress Energy also uses hydroelectric power at four plants in North Carolina and purchases energy from refuse and wood-fueled generators throughout our service area. In addition, nuclear power, which emits no air pollutants, makes up more than one-third of our generation mix, with plants located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.
