Communities plan for new roads, schools and other critical infrastructure improvements decades in advance. The same is true for electricity. Only by careful planning today can we ensure that the electric system we depend upon will meet tomorrow's changing needs and demands.

We know our customers count on us to make sure they have the electricity they need at home, at work – everywhere – when they need it. We are committed to meeting these needs and must carefully balance economic and environmental issues to ensure we can provide safe, reliable and affordable energy.

We are no longer experiencing the economic boom of recent years, however, Florida remains a great place to live and work. Forecasts show a 2 to 3 percent increase per year in customer growth once the country recovers from the slowdown. We must be ready to meet these demands and serve our customers by providing safe, reliable, economic and environmentally sound energy.

Larger homes, more appliances and electronics, and anticipated population growth will likely drive up the demand for electricity over the next decade.  Florida is the fourth-largest state and ranks third nationally in per capita energy consumption. It is our job is to ensure that the electric system that serves our customers is as reliable 20 years from now as it is today.

In addition to growing demand in the coming years, we’ll be addressing the need for an updated, smarter electric grid and more environmentally-friendly generation to address climate change concerns.

As demand grows and needs change, our generation and transmission capability must be prepared to do the same. Adequate and environmentally-responsible, capacity ensures safe, cost-effective and reliable power for our customers and continued economic stability for the community.

Learn more about how a robust electric system empowers both individual customers and the whole community.
