Thank you for participating in the public information meetings conducted by CP&L last September and filling out a project questionnaire regarding the planned transmission line project in Chatham and Lee counties. Your input was important in identifying issues considered in selecting this line route.

As announced earlier this year, CP&L is constructing a new transmission line from the Cape Fear Plant to a new substation located in the vicinity of the existing Siler City substation to ensure the reliability of electric service in Chatham and Lee counties. The purpose of this letter is to notify you of the selected line route for the Cape Fear -to -Siler City project. CP&L already has begun communicating with residents whose property is directly impacted by the selected route.

Choosing the selected line route involved a study comparing alternative routes based on criteria local residents helped us establish at information meetings and through project questionnaires. Generally, what we learned from workshop participates and area residents who submitted questionnaires was that residences and wildlife areas should be avoided and that the visibility of the new line should be minimized to the extent possible. In general, there were more homes located along the existing transmission line than the other routing options. Consequently, many of the alternative line routes that followed the existing transmission line were not desirable options. The objective of the study was to identify the line route or routes that best provide reliable electric power while minimizing adverse impacts on individual property owners and the natural environment. Based on public input received, data collected from local, state, and federal agencies, field observations, and a thorough analysis of the alternative routes, we have selected a line route that meets the stated objective.

Following is a description of the selected line route and the reason it was chosen:

The selected line route from the Cape Fear Plant to the proposed 230Kv substation near the existing Siler City substation consists of the following segments: 0, 1, 23, and 33. Please see the attached overview map showing the selected line route. This line route was selected because it:

  • minimizes the impact to homes and businesses
  • does not impact any known wildlife areas
  • minimizes the impact to historical and archaeological sites
  • crosses the least acreage of woodlands
  • is a relatively direct route between substations

Again, thank you for participating in the public information meetings conducted by CP&L last September and filling out a project questionnaire regarding the planned transmission line project in Chatham and Lee counties.

Sincerely,

Eddie L. Taylor
