Regulatory Agency Oversights

Proposals to build new transmission lines in excess of 161 kilovolts are reviewed by many regulatory bodies to ensure environmental compliance. The topics of review will include:

  • Cultural resources - archaeological and historical
  • Natural resources - threatened and endangered species
  • Sedimentation and erosion control
  • Wetlands
  • Water quality

Progress Energy completes an environmental assessment on each major transmission line project, regardless of whether the document is required by state or federal agencies.

Environmental Enhancements

Rare Plants and Animals: Progress Energy works with the N.C. Natural Heritage Program to manage several sections of power line rights of way to protect species of rare plants.

Wildlife

Transmission line rights of way also provide habitat for many species of wildlife, including rare and endangered species such as eagles, the red cockaded woodpecker and the pine barrens tree frog.

Integrated Vegetation Management

Progress Energy maintains its rights of way by mechanical means (mowing) and through the use of herbicides.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Progress Energy is committed to safe electric service for our customers and a safe working environment for our employees. Extremely low-frequency electric and magnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) are all around us - not just in power lines, but also electrical wiring in buildings, electric motors and appliances, TVs, computers, etc.
