Progress Energy Florida and Tampa Electric are working together to invest in a project to ensure a reliable supply of electricity to homes, schools and businesses in Central Florida. The companies plan to build a 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line to meet the increased demand of existing and future customers.
The line will be 27.5 miles long, beginning at Tampa Electric's Lake Agnes substation, in Polk County, and ending at Progress Energy's planned Gifford substation, in southwest Orange County. The line will be complete by the summer of 2011.
After holding informational meetings to obtain public input in August 2007, Progress Energy and Tampa Electric have selected a preferred corridor for the line. The companies have submitted the corridor to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for certification. You may view the filing here.
A certification hearing with an administrative law judge has been scheduled to begin Aug. 18 at the Radisson World Gate Resort Orlando Hotel, 3011 Maingate Lane, Kissimmee, Fla. 34743. Public comments are welcome during the public hearing portion of the process. For final date and time of the public hearing, click on the DEP link above.
