Progress Energy's Power Careers Program: The People Behind the Power

Progress Energy offers exciting careers in power plants to match specific interests and goals, and to provide opportunities for challenging technical work.

Opportunities include:

  • Instrumentation and control technicians
  • Plant operators
  • Maintenance technicians

The positions are challenging, and the rewards are great, with significant opportunities for advancement.

What We Do

It takes special people to consistently and dependably generate, transmit and deliver power to millions of customers every day. Power plant employees are trained to maintain and operate Progress Energy's fleet of generation plants.

Requirements for power plant operations positions are a two-year associate's degree in a specialized discipline, and a desire to learn and train for a career with Progress Energy. All applicants must complete the application process and undergo pre-employment testing.

About the Program

The Fossil Generation Department at Progress Energy Carolinas started the Power Careers Scholarship in 2002 as a way to work with community colleges to grow the company's own future employees. The scholarship assists students in completing a two-year associate’s degree in a major relevant to the power industry. The scholarship provides community college students in North Carolina and South Carolina $2,600, which is awarded at $650 per semester as well as full-time paid summer and semester employment.

The program also helps community colleges tailor their curriculum to better serve industry needs. As employees retire, the program's already well trained and knowledgeable workforce will replace them. Current statistics show there will be a significant number of craft jobs to be filled over the next 10 years at Progress Energy.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be nominated by their high school or community college instructor, and they must have and maintain a 3.2 GPA and show good job evaluations. Selected high school graduates or first year community college students are eligible for temporary full-time employment at a designated power plant. Upon graduation, Progress Energy extends job offers based upon the student's academics, job evaluations, experience and vacancies.
