RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 11, 2006) -- For the second year in a row, Progress Energy has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America), which lists companies that lead their industries in sustainability, a business approach for managing economic, environmental and social issues.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index tracks the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. In selecting the top performers in each business sector, DJSI reviewed companies on several general and industry-specific topics related to economic, environmental and social dimensions, including corporate governance, environmental policy, climate strategy, human capital development and labor practices. Other U.S. utilities on the list include Constellation Energy Group, Duke Energy, Entergy, Exelon, NiSource, Pinnacle West Capital Corp. and Xcel Energy.

"We are proud to once again be recognized along with corporate leaders from across North America and other energy companies," said Bob McGehee, chairman and CEO of Progress Energy. "Being included on the DJSI North America index is another confirmation that our company is doing many of the things necessary to balance the economic, environmental and social interests of our customers and shareholders, and those who may be interested in investing in our company."

Progress Energy, headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., is a Fortune 250 diversified energy company with more than 23,000 megawatts of generation capacity and $10 billion in annual revenues. The company's holdings include two electric utilities serving approximately 3 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. Progress Energy also includes nonregulated operations covering energy marketing and natural gas exploration. Progress Energy is the 2006 recipient of the Edison Electric Institute's Edison Award, the industry's highest honor, in recognition of its operational excellence. In 2005, the company also received the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates Founder's Award for dedication, commitment and sustained improvement in customer service.
