READY TO START SAVING?
Assess your home’s energy needs

Does your heating and cooling system seem to run constantly just to maintain a comfortable temperature? Is it more than 10 years old?

If you answered YES to either of these questions, you may benefit from replacing your existing system with a new, more energy-efficient heating and cooling system with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of 15 or greater. Use a rebate from the Home Energy Improvement Program to help you pay to replace your system, and not only will your home feel more comfortable, you’ll also see significant savings on your monthly heating and cooling costs.

Are you experiencing drafts, hot spots or cool spots in your home?

An answer of YES to any of these questions could mean your home’s air duct system has leaks, which can waste up to one-third of your heating and cooling costs and have a negative impact on the air quality in your home. Since air ducts typically run underneath a house or through the attic, they can be exposed to many hazards, such as extreme weather, rodent activity or accidental damage from items stored in attics. Through the Home Energy Improvement Program, you can receive rebates to both test and repair any faulty air ducts in your home.

Does your home still have its original windows?

Unless you live in a newer home, a YES to this question means there’s a good chance your windows could be negatively affecting your energy bill, especially if your home is 50+ years old . Energy-efficient windows not only reduce hot spots in your home and protect your furniture, carpet and artwork from fading, they can also reduce outside noise and help you save on energy bills by keeping outside weather from affecting your inside temperature. The Home Energy Improvement Program offers rebates to help you replace all or just some of your windows with energy-efficient models, as the rebate is paid on a per-window basis.

Has your heating and cooling system ever gotten a tuneup?

If you answered NO, you could be wasting energy and money. HVAC systems can often be charged incorrectly or may have incorrect air flow, which reduces system capacity and energy efficiency. These issues could potentially lead to increased repair calls, a shorter life for your HVAC or even compressor failure. If you want to be sure that your HVAC system is running as efficiently as possible, use our Home Energy Improvement rebate to put toward the cost of HVAC system maintenance — an effort that will undoubtedly increase your comfort and save you money.

Is your home 15+ years old ? Do you know the R-value of your attic insulation?

If you live in an older home and have never upgraded your insulation, you’ll see a significant increase in your comfort and a decrease in your energy bills by upgrading your attic insulation to a higher R-value. The R-value of insulation indicates its resistance to heat flow. So, in the summer, insulation with a higher R-value is better at keeping hot air out. And in the winter, it’s better at keeping warm air inside. What’s more, upgraded insulation is more effective at keeping your attic temperature from entering your living space — a condition that will make your heating and cooling system work harder just to keep your house at a desired temperature. If you’d like to see an immediate impact on your comfort and energy bills, use our Home Energy Improvement rebate to help upgrade your home’s insulation to an R-value of R-30 or higher.

I don’t know where to get started. What should I do?

Your first step is to get a free Customized Home Energy Report from Progress Energy. Just complete a simple questionnaire about your home and your energy use, and within three weeks, we’ll mail you back a comprehensive report that details how your household uses electricity and identifies specific places in your home where you may be wasting energy. In addition, you’ll also receive a listing of your energy costs compared to homes in your area and information on cash rebates for energy-efficiency upgrades specific to your energy needs. A Customized Home Energy Report is not required to participate in the program, but may assist you in planning which improvements could help you save the most energy, by providing you with an analysis of your energy consumption and recommendations on cost-effective energy-efficiency improvements for your home. HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
Specifics, rules and regulations

Why is Progress Energy offering this program?

The Home Energy Improvement Program offers Progress Energy residential customers valuable rebates to help offset the cost of making a variety of energy-efficiency home improvement upgrades to help them reduce their monthly energy usage and save money on energy bills.

How do I know if I qualify for the program?

The program is open to residential customers in single-family and manufactured homes that are at least one year old. In addition, the program is also available for residential multifamily developments interested in making energy-efficient improvements to their existing residential buildings.

Can I participate in the program if I rent a house or apartment?

The property owner and tenant must BOTH agree to the terms and conditions of the program, sign the corresponding form and return it with the rebate form. The entity paying for the actual costs associated with the energy-efficiency improvement should apply and will receive the rebate. If the landlord/owner has a Progress Energy electric account at the premises, then the owner may apply directly.

I already know what work I need to have completed on my home. Do I have to get a Customized Home Energy Report to qualify for the rebates?

No, you do not have to complete a Customized Home Energy survey to qualify for rebates. Simply contact one of our prequalified contractors and submit the rebate form.
