Progress Energy is pleased to offer its North Carolina customers the chance to participate in a voluntary environmental program called NC GreenPower.

NC GreenPower is a statewide effort to improve the environment by using "green power," electricity generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, biomass and water.  The non-profit NC GreenPower is a non-profit organization created through collaboration among electric utilities, environmentalists, state regulators and energy generators.

Here's how the NC GreenPower Program works:

  • Participation is completely voluntary-each electric customer can decide whether he or she wants to join.
  • All NC GreenPower contributions are tax deductible.
  • Customers who volunteer to participate may enroll in one of the following two programs:

    • NC GreenPower - this program allows residential and small commercial customers to contribute $4 per month for each 100-kilowatt-hour block of green power.  The $4 per block monthly fee is added to the customer's regular electric bill.  This block of renewable energy will come from solar, wind and biomass resources.

    • NC Renewable Energy -  this program allows larger electricity users to  contribute $2.50 per month for each 100-kilowatt-hour block of green power.  These customers make a minimum commitment of 100 blocks (10,000 kWh) per month for one year.  The $2.50 per block monthly fee is added to the customer's regular electric bill.  This block of renewable energy will come from solar, wind, water and biomass resources.

  • NC GreenPower contributions will be itemized on the customer's monthly statement and appear as an additional charge on his or her regular electric bill.
  • While Progress Energy collects customer contributions on behalf of  NC GreenPower, Progress Energy does not keep any of the money.  All contributions are passed along to NC GreenPower for the continued development of green power sources.
  • Customers who enroll in NC GreenPower but don't pay their contributions will be dropped from the program.  This will not affect the customer's regular electrical service.
  • You must be a Progress Energy Carolinas customer in order for us to collect NC GreenPower contributions via your electric bill.  If you receive electricity from another utility, you should contact that utility about enrolling in the NC GreenPower Program.

The NC GreenPower Program will be administered by Advanced Energy Corp. (http://www.advancedenergy.org)

Advanced Energy is a non-profit corporation founded in 1980 by the N.C. Utilities Commission to explore alternative ways of producing electricity and get more work out of the electricity already available.  Customers who would rather make a one-time contribution to NC GreenPower - instead of monthly contributions - should send it to NC GreenPower, 909 Capability Drive, Suite 2100, Raleigh, NC  27606.
