Installation
  1. How do I choose a solar contractor?

    • www.flaseia.org: This Web site provided by the Florida Solar Energy Industries Association, lists member contractors across the state and includes their contractor license number. If you can't find a contractor in your area, try contacting the listed manufacturers of solar water heater systems for dealers in your area.

    • www.findsolar.com: This Web site allows you to enter your county and generates a list of contractors. Be sure to verify that the contractor is licensed, since licensing information is not listed on this site.

  2. Who can install my solar system and what kind of license is required?
Contractors with the following licenses can install solar systems, but we recommend that you verify the licenses requirements with your local building department:

    • Solar contractor (CV)
    • Specialty solar (CW)
    • Plumbing contractor (CF)
    • Local solar license (RX)

  3. How can I make sure my contractor is licensed?
Verify contractor licenses at www.myfloridalicense.com or call (850) 487-1395. Contact your local building department.

  4. Is a permit required for installation?
Most, but not all, jurisdictions require a building permit. Getting the permit should be the responsibility of your solar contractor and should be included in your contract. If in doubt, contract your local building department.

  5. What else should I know before I purchase a system?

    Reminders:

    • You must participate in Progress Energy Florida's EnergyWise Program BEFORE you install your system in order to qualify for the $450 rebate from Progress Energy.
    • The system must be FSEC certified; the certification number must be included on PEF's rebate form.

    Recommendations:

    • Get more than one estimate, and get them in writing.
    • Avoid high-pressure sales tactics.
    • Compare system types, sizes, prices and warranties.
    • Ask for local references.

Deed-restricted communities may require prior approval for installation. Florida's Solar Rights Law prohibits any community from denying solar installations.
