Progress Energy and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection have teamed up to develop a sustainable hydrogen generator and fuel cell for the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Citrus County, Florida.
The hydrogen fuel cell and 5-kilowatt photovoltaic system (PV) demonstrates sustainable energy, requiring only sunlight and water as a fuel source. The PV cells convert sunlight into electricity, which operates an electrolyzer to produce hydrogen from water. An electrolyzer splits water into its two components -- hydrogen and oxygen.
The oxygen is released harmlessly into the atmosphere, while the hydrogen is used inside a fuel cell, which is similar to a battery, to generate electricity for the park's Wildlife Encounter Pavilion.
View how the fuel cell operates.
The PV system is operational and the fuel cell began operation in June 2005. Data from the fuel cell's production will be available soon.
