Progress Energy’s 2009 annual meeting of shareholders will be held at 10 a.m. on May 13, 2009, at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, N.C. Directions to the facility are included in the proxy notice below.

We are pleased to take advantage of the new Securities and Exchange Commission rules that allow companies to electronically deliver proxy materials to their shareholders. We believe this new process will allow us to provide our shareholders with the information they need while lowering printing and mailing costs and more efficiently complying with our obligations under the securities laws. On or about March 31, 2009, we plan to mail to our registered and beneficial shareholders a notice containing instructions on how to access our combined proxy statement and annual report and vote online.
