  2. Federal tax credits up to 30%.**
  3. Savings up to 85 percent on your hot water costs
How the program works

As part of our year-round EnergyWise program, we'll install free special equipment in your home that enables us to briefly cycle power off and on to your water heater and heating or cooling system during periods of peak community demand. Most customers say they hardly notice the infrequent cycles. Participation entitles you to a monthly credit on your energy bill based on your level of energy usage.

The additional savings kick in when you invest in a solar water heater and have it installed by an approved contractor.

Lower your electric bills and eliminate three cars' worth of harmful emissions

According to the Florida Solar Energy Center, "A solar water heater should save between 50 percent and 85 percent of the hot water portion of the monthly utility bill, or $200 to $300 per year for a family of four, if the backup element is kept at 122° F."

Also, by reducing your electricity demand, you can expect your system to save more than 25,000 pounds of harmful CO2 emissions over 20 years. Taken together, it's enough to give you a warm feeling all over.

How a solar water heater works

1.  Water travels in pipes through solar collectors (typically installed on your roof), where it is heated by the sun.

2.  Then the water is returned to the hot water storage tank, ready for use.

3.  A backup heating element is in the tank, so you'll have plenty of hot water, no matter what the weather.

* Maximum credit includes enrollment of pool pump in the EnergyWise program.

** Federal tax credits are currently available through Dec. 31, 2016.

+ Customers are required to purchase a new solar water heater to be eligible for the credits and rebates. Participation in the EnergyWise program is required for the Progress Energy rebate and requires centrally ducted electric heating and cooling.
