The Appliance Recycling Program is a residential energy-efficiency program designed to reduce energy usage by removing less efficient refrigerators and freezers from residences across the Duke Energy Progress territory. The program includes scheduling, free appliance pickup at the customer's home, transportation of the collected units to a recycling facility, and recovery and recycling of appliance materials.
The Appliance Recycling Program is designed to reduce the number of energy-wasting appliances in the Duke Energy Progress territory. This will help reduce electricity use, especially during periods of high demand, which can delay the need for new power plants. Newer ENERGY STAR appliances are at least 20 percent more energy efficient than older appliances made to 2001 standards. In addition, many customers may have unneeded secondary refrigerators or freezers in basements or garages that must work extra hard to cool in the hot summer months. As our area continues to grow rapidly, it is essential that all customers look for ways to conserve energy and use it wisely. Programs like Appliance Recycling will continue to be part of the Duke Energy Progress balanced solution for meeting the challenges of growing energy demand, rising fuel costs and global climate change.
Customers will receive free removal and recycling of their extra working refrigerator or freezer, as well as an incentive of $50 per appliance for participation, with a limit of two units recycled per calendar year, per account.
All Duke Energy Progress residential customers are eligible to participate in this program. Customers must own the appliance(s) and may only recycle two units per year per account.
Refrigerators and freezers only. Appliances must be between 10-30 cubic feet, readily accessible for removal, plugged in and cooling and empty at the time of collection. The appliance(s) must be located at the customer's residence at the time of pickup.
When we refer to the cubic feet of a refrigerator, we are interested in the internal capacity of the refrigerator -- how much it will hold. All it takes is a few simple measurements.

Make sure your appliance is empty, plugged in and cooling. Also, make sure the pickup crew has clear access to enter the home and remove the appliance. This may mean moving any furniture or valuables to allow plenty of room for the crew to maneuver the appliance. Also, if any doors need to be removed from their hinges for the appliance to fit through the doorway, we ask that customers have these areas cleared before the crew's arrival. Our customer service center can answer specific questions regarding accessibility.
