2012 Corporate Responsibility Report

Introduction

Safely delivering reliable, clean and affordable power – for today and tomorrow – is our fundamental responsibility to our customers.  We work hard every day to meet that responsibility. We also help customers lower their electricity usage and costs with easy, effective energy-efficiency programs and low- and no-cost tips.

A major strategic challenge facing our company is anticipating and meeting population and demand growth in the communities we serve. Our retail service areas have traditionally had steady population growth above the U.S. average. Our service areas include some of the most vibrant and desirable places to live in the nation, and we expect that these areas will continue to grow and prosper.

According to data from the U.S. Census in 2000 and 2010, the population of South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida increased by 15.3, 18.5 and 17.6 percent, respectively. The nation as a whole grew by 9.7 percent over the same period. In addition, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country (Raleigh and Cary, N.C.) is within our service territory. We are planning today, so that when our customers flip the switch – next year and next decade – reliable power is there ready to serve their needs.

Balanced solution strategy

To meet anticipated demand growth from our customers with clean, reliable, affordable power, Progress Energy is pursuing a long-term, balanced solution strategy that includes:

  • Expanding energy-efficiency (EE)and demand-side management (DSM) programs;
  • Investing in renewable and alternative energy resources; and
  • Investing in a state-of-the-art power system, including a smarter grid.
