A commitment to excellence – including in our environmental performance – is an integral part of our company’s culture. In fact, the cornerstone of Progress Energy’s environmental vision is a focus on continual improvement in environmental performance and stewardship.
The company has a formal environmental-management system (EMS) to oversee the environmental impacts of our business. Our EMS generally follows the International Standards Organization 14001 standard and establishes a process to identify and address environmental risks and to ensure senior management oversight. Individual business units have accountability for environmental compliance, and they are supported by a centralized environmental support organization. The environmental support team includes a technical environmental section with governance and risk-management staff as well as an environmental policy and strategy group. We also have a waste vendor audit program that requires a financial and environmental evaluation of waste and recycling disposal facilities before they are approved for use.
The company has also established an Environment, Health and Safety Performance Council (EHSPC), composed of senior management. The EHSPC provides the overall strategic direction for corporate environmental policy, monitors environmental regulatory compliance and approves targets that measure, track and drive continual improvement. The company’s environmental performance and activities are reported regularly to the Progress Energy board of directors’ Operations and Nuclear Oversight Committee, which reviews and assesses our company’s operations, environmental, health and safety performance and policies.
