ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (July 12, 2011) – Energy efficiency is one of the few investments that can help home owners gain a return on their electric bill and on the value of their home. Progress Energy Florida suggests customers consider replacing or remodeling with energy-efficient products to help improve the resale value of the home and make it stand out in a crowded marketplace. 

According the National Association of REALTORS®, environmental efficiency has become an increasingly important factor in home buying decisions due to rising energy costs. Energy-efficient appliances and lighting were “very” or “somewhat” important to a majority of home buyers, and heating and cooling costs were at least “somewhat” important to 88 percent of buyers.

“By participating in our comprehensive energy-efficiency program, Progress Energy Florida customers have saved more than $1 billion in energy costs,” says Kimberly Berghoefer manager of residential energy-efficiency programs for Progress Energy Florida. “Marketing the energy efficiency of homes is a winning proposition for homeowners, home buyers, and the environment.”

Wood and vinyl window replacement ranks among the top 10 most valuable remodeling projects in Remodeling Magazine’s Cost Versus Value report. The Orlando metropolitan area in particular is mentioned for the high return on replacement windows. The typical homeowner recouped up to 82.9 percent of the cost compared to the national average of 71.6 percent. 

If you are looking to make an investment in your existing home that will help boost your return on investment (ROI), consider one of several energy-efficient upgrades eligible for cash rebates through Progress Energy:

  • Heat pump replacement - Earn a Progress Energy rebate of up to $350 when you upgrade to a high-efficiency heat pump.
  • Air duct testing and repair - If a duct test is recommended during a no-cost Home Energy Check, Progress Energy will pay the first $30 of the typically $60 test and the first $150 in repair costs.
  • Attic insulation and attic sealing - Progress Energy offers a rebate of $75 or more to qualifying customers who upgrade their attic insulation to R-30 or greater.
  • Energy-efficient window installation - Install energy-efficient windows and you could earn a Progress Energy rebate of $1 per square foot of window area, up to $250.


Progress Energy has an extensive list of home improvement rebates designed to assist homeowners lower their energy costs that can help improve their homes resale value. For example, to help make your existing windows more energy efficient, Progress Energy offers rebates toward the installation of window screens and window film.

To participate, the first step is to complete a no-cost Home Energy Check, which can be performed online, over the phone or in person.  During a Home Energy Check, participating customers receive an analysis of the home’s energy use and a list of customized, energy-saving recommendations from a highly trained Energy Advisor. A Home Energy Check also is the only way to qualify for valuable Progress Energy incentives toward energy-efficient home improvements.
