Progress Energy and its employees raise $3.3 million to benefit charitable organizations

RALEIGH (August 18, 2011) – Progress Energy (NYSE: PGN) and its employees have pledged to give approximately $3.3 million during 2012 to benefit charitable organizations in the Carolinas and Florida.

Employees pledged $2.2 million during the company's annual "Give Where You Live" Employee Giving Campaign. The Progress Energy Foundation provides a 50 percent match to employee contributions, bringing the total pledge to $3.3 million. Over the last decade, Progress Energy employees have given more than $21 million through the Employee Giving Campaign.

“Progress Energy’s Employee Giving Campaign is an important way for the company and our employees to make a positive difference in the communities where we live and work,” said Bill Johnson, chairman, president and CEO. “These are financially challenging times for many of our customers, as well as for many organizations that are doing good work in our communities. The combined efforts of employees and the Progress Energy Foundation will help our communities and our customers at a time of real need. I am proud to work with such a generous and caring group of people.”

Progress Energy's Employee Giving Campaign is held annually and provides employees with an opportunity to give from their personal funds to charitable organizations of their choice in the company's service areas. The pledges made in 2011 will be paid to the agencies on a quarterly basis in 2012. The Progress Energy Foundation is funded each year by the company's board of directors from shareholder funds.
