RALEIGH, N.C. (April 21, 2011) – The Progress Energy Foundation is contributing $100,000 to the American Red Cross to help local victims of the April 16 violent storms. The funds will be distributed among the affected counties in the utility’s service territory.
Progress Energy is also providing employees with time off to assist their communities with clean-up efforts over the next month as part of the company’s Give Where You Live volunteer program. The utility has set up collection boxes at many office facilities, power plants and operations centers to collect donated food, water, clothing and other items.
In addition to the 340,000 customers who lost power, the damage to our communities from these violent storms is devastating, and many of us have been affected or know of friends, coworkers or family who were affected,” said Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas. “We are committed to rebuilding our communities and helping our neighbors in need.
Through Progress Energy’s Give Where You Live employee involvement program, employees give generously of their time and resources to local charities. In 2010, employees gave $3.3 million, including a 50 percent company match, to local nonprofit organizations. In addition, employees joined with customers to give more than $450,000 to the Energy Neighbor Fund, which is matched dollar for dollar by the Progress Energy Foundation.
